Early Life and Education: Dr. Kamal was born on March 11, 1968, in Barishal, Bangladesh. In 2006, he completed his Ph.D. in Psychology at Kyushu University, Japan, specializing in the area of Experimental Psychology. Supported by the prestigious Monbukagakusho (Monbuso) Scholarship, his doctoral research encompassed seven innovative experiments that significantly advanced the understanding of visual spatial memory. He earned his M.Sc. (Thesis) in Psychology, with a specialization in Clinical Psychology, and his B.Sc. (Honors) in Psychology from the University of Dhaka, achieving First Class First distinctions in both programs. He was awarded the esteemed Professor M. U. Ahmed Gold Medal for academic excellence in his M.Sc. Earlier, he completed his Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) and Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams in the Science group, securing First Division in both.
Academic and Professional Career: Dr. Kamal has been an accomplished academic, researcher, and leader since 1998, making a lasting impact on the field of psychology. He is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, and served as the department’s Chairman from 2021 to 2024. Throughout his career, he has introduced numerous initiatives to advance psychology education and research in the country, with many notable efforts implemented during his chairmanship.
Teaching and Mentorship: Dr. Kamal has significantly impacted psychology education in Bangladesh. He has taught various undergraduate and graduate courses, including Research Methodology, Abnormal Psychology, Experimental Psychology, and many others. Currently, he teaches Basic Psychometrics, Forensic Psychology, and Research Methods and Statistics. A dedicated mentor, Dr. Kamal has supervised numerous Ph.D., M.Phil. and Master’s theses, guiding students to excel in academia, industry, and public service. He has also spearheaded curriculum development and training programs, fostering the growth of psychology as a discipline in Bangladesh.
Research Contributions: Dr. Kamal’s research achievements are equally remarkable, with over 90 publications in leading journals. His articles have appeared in highly respected journals such as Vision Research, Spatial Vision, Current Psychology, Journal of Genetic Psychology, Journal of Child and Family Studies, International Journal of Psychology, Cross-Cultural Research, and Social Indicators Research. His work spans diverse areas, including psychometrics, interpersonal relations, school psychology, and perceptual psychology. Dr. Kamal has also led numerous funded projects, addressing critical issues such as cyber victimization, parental acceptance-rejection, and educational testing, contributing both theoretical and practical insights to the field.
Leadership in Professional Organizations: Dr. Kamal has demonstrated exceptional leadership in professional psychology organizations. He is the Founding President of the Bangladesh Psychometric Society (BPS) and the Bangladesh School Psychology Society (BSPS). Additionally, he serves as Vice President of the Bangladesh Psychological Association (BPA), Vice President of the Asia Pacific School Psychology Association (APSPA), and General Secretary of the Bangladesh Foundation for Human Resource Development. Under his leadership, these organizations have made significant strides in promoting psychological science, psychometric practices, and mental health services in Bangladesh and beyond.
International Recognition and Awards: Internationally, Dr. Kamal is widely recognized for his expertise, having delivered keynote speeches, facilitated workshops, and chaired sessions at conferences in 20 countries. He has also served as a consultant psychometrician for high-profile projects, such as designing psychometric tests for metro rail operator selection in Bangladesh. His editorial contributions include serving as Chief Editor of the Bangladesh Journal of Psychology and Associate Editor of the Dhaka University Journal of Biological Sciences. Dr. Kamal’s accomplishments have earned him numerous accolades, including the ISPA-InSPA Leadership Award (2019) for his contributions to school psychology. Through his unwavering dedication to teaching, groundbreaking research, and visionary leadership, Dr. Muhammad Kamal Uddin continues to inspire and advance the field of psychology.
