A meeting between Dhaka University (DU) and the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) of China was held on December 15, 2024 in Kunming, China for strengthening collaboration on oceanography research. Dhaka University (DU) Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Dr. Mamun Ahmed and Deputy Director General of FIO Prof. Fangli Qiao led the meeting on behalf of their respective institution. It may be mentioned that Dhaka University Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Dr. Mamun Ahmed is now on a visit to China for attending the 3rd China-Indian Ocean Region Forum on Development Cooperation.
On the first day of the two-day Ocean Forum, an important discussion took place between the University of Dhaka and China’s First Institute of Oceanography (FIO). During the meeting they emphasized the significance of traditional oceanographic disciplines such as physical, chemical, and biological oceanography, ocean modeling, disaster management, and ocean forecasting. DU Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) Prof. Dr. Mamun Ahmed highlighted the crucial role of marine biotechnology in addressing contemporary oceanographic challenges. He urged researchers and policy-makers to prioritize this emerging field and explore its potential to revolutionize marine science and technology.
It may be mentioned that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Dhaka University and the First Institute of Oceanography (FIO) has already been signed to conduct join collaborative research in this regard. The participants at the meeting hoped that this bilateral partnership would play a significant role in addressing Bangladesh’s natural disaster challenges and effectively utilizing its marine resources.
Chairman of DU Oceanography Department Dr. K M Azam Chowdhury, representatives from FIO Dr. Lin Zhou, Dr. Shizhu Wang, Dr. Changshui Xi and some other foreign experts were present on this occasion.
