A two-day long 8th International Botanical Conference has begun today February 28, 2024 at Nabab Nawab Ali Chowdhury Senate Bhaban auditorium of Dhaka University (DU). Vice-Chancellor of DU Prof. Dr. A S M Maksud Kamal inaugurated the conference as chief guest. Bangladesh Botanical Society and the Department of Botany of DU have jointly organized this event with a theme of ‘Plant Sciences in Achieving SDGs’.
President of Bangladesh Botanical Society Prof. Dr. Md. Abul Bashar presided over the inaugural session while retired Professor of DU Botany Department Dr. AKM Nazrul Islam and President of Reliance Industrial Park Limited Mr. Nurul Haque Chowdhury addressed the inaugural function as special guests. Chairman of the Department of Botany Prof. Dr. Mihir Lal Saha delivered key-note speech. Secretary General of Bangladesh Botanical Society Prof. Dr. Ashfaque Ahmed delivered welcome address while Prof. Dr. Mohammed Almujaddade Alfasane gave vote of thanks.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. A S M Maksud Kamal stressed the need for conducting solution based researches to protect biodiversity, environment and natural resources as well as produce adequate vegetables and crops in the country. We have to ensure food security in the country through research and innovation, he added.
The Vice-Chancellor urged the botanists to play an effective role in ensuring food safety and reducing risk due to climate change. He also emphasized on sharing knowledge and conducting joint collaborative research among regional scientists in this regard.
It may be mentioned that teachers and researchers from different countries including Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Algeria are participating at the conference.
