The Department offers a supportive learning environment, of the highest quality, providing programmes of study relevant to the present and future needs of modern business and social organisations, both national and international.

The Programmes are supported by excellent learning resources and high class teaching. The vocational orientation of the programmes offers students with a wide range of employment opportunities and scholarship possibilities in partner universities and institutions. The Department has strong collaboration with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO), the Japan-Bangladesh Chamber of Commerce and Industries (JBCCI), Shaplaneer, the Bangladesh Ikebana Association, Rotary Public and the Kazuko Bhuiyan Welfare Trust. It has exchange programmes with Japanese universities such as Sophia University, Kobe University, Shimani University and Nara Women’s University. Moreover, students of the Department receive Japanese Government MEXT Scholarships (Monbukagakusho) for Masters and PhD and short term scholarships for certificate and diploma programmes in Japan.

The curricula offered in Japanese Studies, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level are multidisciplinary in nature incorporating studies in social sciences and humanities such as economics, sociology, political science and research methodology. They also include contextual studies of the Japanese economy, politics, society, history, culture and international relations.

The Department provides state-of-the-art infrastructural facilities including Japanese Language Lab and Computer Lab. To improve leadership and human qualities of the students, the Department has set up a number of clubs such as English and Japanese Language Club, Cultural Club, Sports Club and Debating Club. It also organises events and training programmes, for example, Career Talk and DJS Lecture Series to develop appropriate skills and knowhow so that students can find employment and do well in their workplace.

The staff of the Department are highly regarded academics with both national and international reputations and exposure to education and research. Their top priority is to provide quality teaching and appropriate support to every student in order to produce knowledge-based Japanologists, who, in turn, will produce and disseminate knowledge and skills gained for the benefit of all.

The Department aspires to become a knowledge hub and regional Centre of Excellence of Japanese Studies in South East Asia. Currently the main research of the Department is related to politics, society, culture and economic relationships of Japan with particular reference to Bangladesh and the Asia-Pacific region.
