History of Shamsun Nahar Hall

Shamsunnahar hall is one of the historically acclaimed hall of Dhaka University. Construction of second female student hall of Dhaka University named as “New Womens Hall” was started on 12 January 1971. After the independence during the ruling of father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on 2 August 1972 the then Vice-chancellor professor Mojaffor Ahmed Chowdhury inaugurated the hall as Shamsunnahar hall according to the name of Shamsun Nahar Mahmud, who was the competent successor of the pioneer of women liberation Begum Rokeya. Dr. Syeda Fatema Sadek was appointed as the first provost of the hall. Currently, Dr. Lafifa Jamal, Former Chairperson and Professor of the Department of Robotics and Mechatronics Engineering is performing as the provost.

There are three buildings for the accommodations of students – honours, masters and extension building. There are dining, canteen for the students. There are multiple study rooms and a library. There is a hall auditorium where various cultural programs are held. There is a computer lab for resident and non-resident students. Shamsunnahar Mahmud scholarship and Fatema Iqbal Trust Fund scholarship are awarded to the meritorious students and other educational activities are conducted here. There is a guest room for the sitting arrangement of the visitors.
