1. Introduction/ background:

There is a Directorate in the Dhaka University named as Physical Education Center. It was established in the year 1925. In helping education & research and to develop the body, mind and also for recreation of the Dhaka University student, physical education center was established.

2. Sports Board:

There shall be the ‘‘Dhaka University Sports Board’’ to encourage, promote and conduct various Games and Sports and also to organise competitions and courses in Games and Sports in the Dhaka University.

a. The Board shall encourage, promote, conduct, control and regulate Games and Sports and courses on Games and Sports among the Students of the University.
b. The Board shall arrange facilities for coaching and competition of Games and Sports.

c. The Board shall awaken and promote a wide and real interest in respect of health, physical education and recreation among the students.

d. The Board shall prepare program of various Games and Sports for the session.

e. The session for the Sport Board shall commence from the month of July every year.
f. The Sports Board shall consist of :
i. The Pro Vice-Chancellor- Chairman
ii. All Provosts of Halls of Residence- Member

iii. Three Chairmen/Directors of Departments/Institutes, ”
nominated by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor.

iv. Two Teachers-in-Charge of Games Member and Sports from ”
among the Departments to be nominated by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor on the recommendation of the Director of Physical Education.
v. Two Senior Teachers interested in Games and Sports ”
nominated by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor on the recommendation of
the Director of Physical Education.
vi. The Chie Medical Officer of the Dhaka University- ”

vii. The Advisor of Physical Education Center, Proctor &
Chairman of all Sub-committees, Dhaka University- ”

ix. The Director of Physical Education Center- Member Secretary
g. Sub Committees-
Under the Sports Board, there are some respective games Sub-Committee for the 2 years to conducting various competitions, like Inter Department, Inter Hall, Inter University, National and International Football, Cricket, Volley Ball, Basket ball & Handball etc.

3. a. Adviser post has been created since 1995 and the approved by Dhaka University Syndicate. The work of Adviser is to advice and direct the Director, Physical Education for development of games and sports.

b. The Directorate of Physical Education runs by one Director, One Deputy-Director, three Assistant Directors and seven Physical Instructors and 4 section officers (upgraded). There are also seven 3rd class and Twenty five 4th class employees. The present Director (Acting) is Mr. Showkatur Rahman.

5. Brief profile:

5.1 The Physical Education Center organise coaching, tournament/competitions of games of sports.

5.2 The events for the competitions are Cricket, Football, Hockey, Volleyball, Badminton, Table tennis, Athletics, Swimming and water polo, basketball & Judo Karate, Archery etc.

5.3 On special basis swimming, judo & karate and yoga coaching are going on in this center.

5.4 The venues of the tournaments are the Dhaka University Center Playground, Swimming pool, Gymnasium and two Cricket grounds. The inter University Tournaments organise in the Dhaka University campus or jointly as well as other university campuses by the decision of Inter University Sports Board. The National level competitions are arranged in different venues decided by the federations. The Dhaka University participates in those tournaments by the decision of the Respective sub-committees of sports board.
5.5 The champion teams awarded trophies, blazers, scholarship and also University Blues.

5.6 Beyond above the center is open for Dhaka University Students for exercise freely and to exercise by using modern exercise equipments.

5.7 For participation in the competition/tournaments and to organise the same the budgets are necessary. The budgets re-commended by the sub-committees that are submitted to the authority for approval.

6. Functions-

6.1 1st year & 2nd year (Hons) students shall be attending 40 classes of Physical Education activities per academic session.

6.2 The students those who are sportsmen and interested in sports, they may participate in the Inter-department, Inter Hall and Inter University various competition.

6.3 The students of Dhaka University may avail freehand exercises and exercise with apparatus.

7. Facilities (Including playground and swimming pool) : For conducting sports, games and to develop body, mind of the students and teachers the facilities are as following:

i. Gymnasium

ii. Swimming pool

iii. Cricket Ground
iv. Central Play Ground

Further, the director would play vital role in opening BPED (Bachelor of Physical Education) for Dhaka University Students and others, who can full fill the requisition for this Diploma.
