The Department of Information Science and Library Management (ISLM), University of Dhaka, in collaboration with UNESCO Dhaka and the South Asia Chapter of the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIS&T), organized a seminar on the theme “The New Digital Frontiers of Information: Media and Information Literacy for Public Interest Information.” The seminar was honored by the presence of the honorable Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic) of the University of Dhaka, Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed, as the Chief Guest. Special guests included Ms. Noore Jannat Proma, Sector Lead, Communication and Information Sector at UNESCO Dhaka office, and Dr. Md. Moniruzzaman, an information specialist and former head of office, the United Nations Information Center (UNIC), Dhaka.
Professor Dr. Kazi Mostak Gausul Hoq, convener of the seminar, delivered the welcome speech. Professor Dr. Md. Anwarul Islam discussed MIL, highlighting its 50th anniversary since the term’s inception in 1974 and ASIS&T’s global initiatives.
Professor Dr. S. M. Zabed Ahmed, as a resource person, stressed on integrating MIL course into university curricula. Ms. Noore Jannat Proma addressed misinformation and disinformation, outlining UNESCO’s awareness-building efforts. Dr. Md. Moniruzzaman discussed the United Nations’ role in combating misinformation during the pandemic.
Chief Guest Professor Dr. Mamun Ahmed emphasized MIL’s significance, sharing professional experiences. He commended the ISLM Department for the timely seminar and pledged support for future MIL activities.
Ms. Rowshon Akter, Associate Professor of the Department moderated the seminar and it concluded with the vote of thanks by the Chairman of the Department Professor Dr. Md. Roknuzzaman. The event drew teachers, students and participants, fostering discussions on MIL’s importance in today’s digital landscape.
