A special public lecture on” Our Common Struggle Against Violent Extremism” organized by the Department of International Relations of Dhaka University (DU) was held today March 30, 2016 at the Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium of Social Science Building of the university. US Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights Dr. Sarah Sewall delivered the lecture. Dhaka University Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique Presided over the function while US Ambassador to Bangladesh Marcia Stephens Bloom Bernicat and Chairman of the Department of International Relations of DU Prof.  Ehsanul Huq also addressed it.

US Under Secretary Dr. Sarah Sewall stressed the need for launching united efforts of all people against terrorism, extremism and violence in the world. She said people have been facing trouble at different parts of the world due to violence and terrorism. She urged all specially local and central administrations, media persons, young leaders, researchers and professionals to work together to overcome this situation. Dhaka University can play key role to create awareness in this regard, she mentioned. US Under Secretary highly praised the role of Bangladesh Government against terrorism and extremism. The US and Bangladesh will work together against it, she hoped.

 Vice-Chancellor Prof. Dr. AAMS Arefin Siddique in his speech said Dhaka University always stands for democracy, equality, liberty, peace, human rights, poverty reduction, secularism, scientific development, cultural enrichment and the like for overall progress of humanity. He declared united stands with US global efforts to make the world free from terrorism, extremism, fundamentalism, violence and bigotry. He thanked the US Under Secretary Dr. Sarah for her outstanding contribution to promote democracy and human rights issues in the world.
